“Empathetic perspective is about slowing it down and making sure you’re hitting all the right points for all the different parties involved.” - Bob Moesta
Being empathetic is about understanding all of the people involved in a decision.
👩⚕️ Think of a nursing facility.
There’s the person who needs the help. What are their concerns? Is this person okay with this decision, was it even their decision?
There’s also the person who’s helping - or not. Often it’s the kids. Are they doing this to or for mom or dad? How do they feel? What are their concerns?
🍕 We consider perspectives all the time. Pizza is popular because it’s the least objectionable - a common understanding.
But we bring biases. We’ve tendencies from the food we eat to the things we think. Our tendencies are common to us but clear to others. Groups highlight the differences. Groups build empathetic perspectives.
📝 Homework: Think of someone in your office or home you’ve disagreed with for a while. Can you figure out their perspective? Listen without judging. Can you come to terms with what’s going on from their side?
